$150,000 in crime prevention money awarded to Nanaimo non-profits

NANAIMO — Many local organizations and the valuable services they offer will continue, thanks to funding from an unlikely source.

Five Nanaimo organizations are splitting nearly $150,000 from the province’s Crime Prevention and Remediation grant program.

When houses and personal property is seized by the authorities in their investigations, it’s sold off and the money returned to the community via the program.

The money is returning to Nanaimo to fund programs specifically designed to undermine crime and help people stay away from criminal activity.

• Haven Society: $30,000 increasing supports provided to victims of gender-based and intimate partner violence
• Nanaimo Family Life Association: $30,000 funding for a variety of projects to keep Nanaimo families safe
• Nanaimo Men’s Resource Centre: $30,000 funding operations for one year
• Nanaimo Aboriginal Centre Society: $28,950 funding projects restoring cultural traditions and supporting holistic healing of Indigenous youth
• Nanaimo Region John Howard Society: $28,808 funding increased staff hours at the Restorative Justice Program

Nanaimo received the third most funding from mid and north Vancouver Island communities, behind Campbell River and Duncan.

The 2020 amount is roughly equal to the amount received in 2019.
