COVID-19 cases grow slightly on Vancouver Island, hospitalizations drop under 100

NANAIMO — More and more people are recovering from COVID-19 as the new case numbers and hospitalizations continue trending downward.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix announced 29 new cases of the virus in B.C in Friday afternoon written statement, for a total of 1,853 cases.

Three new cases of the virus were centred in the Island Health region, while a total of 114 of the cases have been diagnosed across the Island Health region.

Data as of Thursday, April 23 stated five people in the Island Health region are hospitalized due to COVID-19.

Friday’s statement reaffirmed best practices for continuing B.C.’s battle against the novel coronavirus.

The number of people hospitalized by COVID-19 dropped to 96, with just under half in intensive or critical care.

The province also announced four additional deaths, all in the Fraser Valley and Vancouver regions for a total number of 98 people who have lost their lives to COVID-19.

“There have been no new outbreaks in long-term care, assisted living or acute care in the last day. In total, 20 facilities and three acute-care units have active outbreaks, with outbreaks declared over at 10 care facilities,” the statement said.

The next update is expected on Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m.
