No new COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island as B.C. continues to flatten the curve

NANAIMO — The growing trend of fewer COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island and across British Columbia continued Tuesday, April 7.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer, announced no new cases in the Island Health region for the third time in the past week. There remain 79 confirmed cases on COVID-19 on Vancouver Island.

In B.C., 25 new cases were confirmed for a total of 1291. Of those, 805 have recovered.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in British Columbia has fallen over recent weeks. Active cases are defined by subtracting the number of people fully recovered from the total number of confirmed cases.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, the province crested on March 26 with 525 active cases and has fallen to 486 since.

Dr. Henry spoke about the upcoming Easter holiday during her daily briefing, a time where people would typically travel to be with family.

“I really emplore people, this is not our time to do that right now,” Dr. Henry said. “We need to avoid all non-essential travel and it’s important that we don’t go to communities where we might not have the resources to support us if we become sick or there’s a medical emergency.”

Four more deaths related to COVID-19 were also announced Tuesday, all in the Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Valley regions.
