No new Vancouver Island COVID-19 cases as B.C.-wide numbers crest 1,000

NANAIMO — A respite for Vancouver Island residents and care providers.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced on Tuesday, March 31 no new COVID-19 cases were confirmed on the Island.

The number of confirmed cases remains at 67. The first Island case was confirmed on March 11 and has risen steadily since then.

Eight of the Island cases are in acute care.

Across B.C., Dr. Henry announced the number of cases has surpassed the 1,000 mark to sit at 1,013.

Nearly 130 people are in hospital, with 61 people in ICU. Dr. Henry noted there was little change in the number of people in the ICU.

Five additional people passed away because of COVID-19 for a provincial total of 24.

The number of recovered cases has now surpassed the number of active cases by one.

Premier John Horgan is set to address the province at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday night. His remarks will be broadcast on major B.C. TV stations and online.
