Neighbours help save house after workshop destroyed in fire

NANAIMO — It was a team effort of firefighters and neighbours armed with garden hoses to preserve a Cathers Lake area home.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue investigator Alan Millbank said the fire destroyed a large workshop on Dockside Way in the late afternoon of Sunday, March 29, but the owners’ home just a few feet away was saved.

“There’s a little damage to the exterior of the house, but they’re able to stay, it was a pretty good save,” Millbank said

Millbank said there were no injuries. He was in the process of pinpointing the cause of the non-suspicious fire on Monday morning.

Several neighbours soaked the home with hoses before firefighters arrived to contain the fire, the homeowner said.

He praised his neighbours and firefighters for minimizing the damage to his home, particularly in such an unsettling time.

“I can’t express my thanks enough, it means so much,” he said.

Insurance will cover the losses.
