COVID-19 precautions mean free transit for Nanaimo and area riders

NANAIMO — Efforts to promote social distancing and limit face-to-face encounters are having a positive benefit for bus riders.

The Regional District of Nanaimo announced all their buses will be loaded at the rear doors, meaning riders don’t have to pay the $2.50 fare deposited at the front of the bus.

“By protecting the health and safety of our drivers, we’re able to offer a level of service where everyone will benefit,” RDN transit manager Darren Marshall told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Anyone with mobility challenges who requires the ramp or the bus to be lowered can still use the front entrance to an RDN bus.

Marshall said waived bus fares doesn’t mean everyone should rush to use the free service.

“If you’re not feeling well don’t ride the transit system and call 811 for medical advice. We encourage everyone to use and maintain the recommended social distance of two meters.”

While disinfecting RDN buses has increased amid COVID-19 concerns, hand sanitizers aren’t available due to supply concerns and worries riders would consume it.

Handydart service remains free.

As of Thursday, March 19, Marshall couldn’t speak to any upcoming service reductions or route cancellations. BC Transit previously announced Victoria-area riders should brace for interruptions to service.
