Major grocery chains provide special shopping hours for seniors in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — Most major grocery store chains have adjusted hours and special shopping times dedicated to seniors and those who are immunocompromised.

Real Canadian Superstore, Save-On-Foods, Quality Foods and Country Grocer all announced reduced hours in the wake of growing social distancing measures put in place to fight COVID-19.

Beginning Thursday, March 19, Save-On-Foods will adjust operating hours by opening at 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. However, the first hour of operation will be exclusively for seniors, people with disabilities and those extra vulnerable to the virus.

“Save-On-Foods will continue to work hard to safeguard the health of our team members, our customers and our communities. We have never seen times as turbulent and as uncertain as these and we are so proud of the great work our teams are doing.”

Earlier in the week, Quality Foods announced a similar move beginning Monday, March 23 with the first two hours (7 a.m. to 9 a.m.) dedicated daily to seniors.

Country Grocer also adjusted their hours with the first hour of business beginning at 7 a.m. earmarked as seniors-only while also closing at 8 p.m.

Real Canadian Superstore will also operate under reduced hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with dedicated time for seniors from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.

“Limiting operating hours will give the teams at Save-On-Foods additional time to clean and sanitize, restock the shelves and better serve their customers,” Save-On-Foods said in a release. “(This also) gives the front-line grocery store workers a much-needed chance to recharge during these unprecedented times.”

The statement from Save-On-Foods noted they are not experiencing a widespread shortage of product, but are working to address “supply chain challenges” getting goods to stores.

Save-On-Foods and Quality Foods each have three locations in Nanaimo, while Country Grocer has two.
