Events in Nanaimo, Parksville that have been cancelled due to COVID-19 precautions

NANAIMO — COVID-19 and precautionary measures to limit its spread has forced several events to be either cancelled or postponed in Nanaimo and Parksville.

Nanaimo

  • Local group and gatherings
    • Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced all gatherings of more than 50 people are banned.
    • City of Nanaimo is cancelling all recreation facilities as of 6 p.m. Monday, March 16.
    • The Town of Ladysmith has closed its public offices and facilities.
    • Vancouver Island University suspended classes from March 16-20 in order to implement online curriculum for its on-campus students
    • Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public Schools will be closed indefinitely following spring break.
    • Provincial and Supreme Court at the Nanaimo courthouse are cancelled after someone who had contact with a person with COVID-19 attended court.
    • Front counter service at the Nanaimo RCMP detachment is closed and services, like fingerprints, are cancelled for the time being.
    • Vancouver Island Regional Library closed at the end of Monday, March 16, 2020. All programs, events and room rentals are also cancelled during the closure.
    • Both Woodgrove Shopping Centre and Nanaimo North Town Centre are operating on reduced hours
    • Nanaimo Museum closed indefinitely on March 16.
    • Numerous Nanaimo churches are closed indefinitely, check with your congregation
    • St Paul’s Anglican church has cancelled their Community Neighbours Lunch on Friday March 20.
    • Air Canada flights from Nanaimo to Calgary are suspended
    • The first cruise ship to arrive in Nanaimo, a Grand Princess vessel on May 8 is cancelled, so is the MS Regatta on June 3
    • The ferry from Maffeo Sutton Park to Newcastle Island is suspended
  • Entertainment
    • The Port Theatre is closed until further notice, cancelling events such as Matthew Good, the Vancouver Island Symphony and Yesterday Once More.
    • The Nanaimo CDC has postponed their Rock for a Cause fundraiser scheduled for April 3, to October 29.
    • Casino Nanaimo is closed Monday, March 16 until further notice.
    • Harbour City Theatre is shut down until further notice
    • NDSS Relay for Life on April 20 has been cancelled
    • Nanaimo Heritage Festival scheduled for May 17 has been cancelled
    • Nanaimo Silly Boat Regatta scheduled for July 19 has been cancelled
    • Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival scheduled for July 10-23 has been cancelled

Parksville/Qualicum

  • Local groups and gatherings
    • Provincial Healh Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced all gatherings of more than 50 people are banned.
    • City of Parksville has closed all offices to the public. Critical services such as fire, bylaw enforcement and City operations will continue to operate.
    • All council meetings and other public events/meetings schedule by the City are closed to the public until further notice. Meetings are webcast live/archived on the City website.
    • City Budget deliberation meetings March 30 and April 8 also closed to public, however City will have a way for people to comment/participate virtually
    • City of Parksville Town Hall on community safety March 23 cancelled
    • Oceanside Place Arena and Ravensong Aquatic Centre are closed
    • The City is closing all Parksville public playgrounds. This does not affect school playgrounds
    • All registered recreation programs including day camps and drop-in activities have been cancelled effective 5:00 p.m. March 16.
    • The Qualicum Beach Seniors’ Activity Centre will be closed until 9 a.m., April 1, 2020.
    • Oceanside Health and Wellness Fair March 21 at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre is postponed
    • Fairwinds Golf Club and its restaurant closed March 16 until further notice.
    • Parksville Beach Festival and accompanying sand sculpture competition has been cancelled for 2020.
  • Entertainment
    • The St. Patrick’s Day dinner and dance scheduled for March 14 will be postponed until April 4, 2020. Tickets for the event that have been paid for will be honoured for that date. If the purchasers of tickets wish to be reimbursed, please send an email to Margaret Rothe at kemarothe@gmail.com and a reimbursement will be sent after April 1.

Sports

  • Nanaimo Clippers, BCHL playoffs have been completely cancelled by the CJHL
  • Oceanside Generals, VIJHL playoffs cancelled
  • Midget Tier 1 Championships hosted by Nanaimo Minor Hockey March 15-20 cancelled
  • CCAA National Womens basketball championship cancelled, hosted by VIU Mar 19-21
  • VIU Mariners mens hockey playoffs beginning in Burnaby Friday March 13 have been cancelled
  • Volleyball BC tournament 15U Girls Super Series in Nanaimo has been cancelled
  • The Nanaimo Curling Club ceased operations at midnight on Friday, March 13 cancelling leagues and upcoming bonspiels
  • Most fitness facilities in Nanaimo are closed until further notice.
  • Nanaimo Rowing Club has suspended all activities
  • Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club closed for the season. All club events and open tournaments are cancelled.

Major Vancouver Island centres

  • Mount Washington closed Monday, March 16 and will reassess as the situation develops
