NANAIMO — A much-needed affordable housing complex on Rosehill St. is set for completion this fall in Nanaimo.

The Rosehill affordable housing project will be made up of 23 studio apartments in a three storey-building and offered at a monthly rent of between $375 and $800 per month, depending on income levels.

Vancouver Island Mental Health Society will own and operate the facility.

Taryn O’Flanagan, VIMHS executive director, told NanaimoNewsNOW in October, 2018 when the project was first approved, the complex is designed for people who’ve achieved a stable position in life and a ready for something more permanent.

“This will provide an opportunity for those folks who are currently living in a transitional housing situation to have a lifetime home,” she said. “We’re going to provide staff support to folks who live in the building so they have tenancy support to maintain that housing and ongoing check-ins as needed.”

The City contributed $54,000 in waivers, while $2.3 million was provided by the province and another $2.1 in financing and operational funding. VIMHS provided the property and half a million dollars in equity for the building.

“The Rosehill location will house some of our most vulnerable citizens,” Mayor Leonard Krog added in the release. “The city is very pleased to support this project, which will provide them security, safety and improve their quality of life.”

The project is due for completion in October 2020.
