NANAIMO — A man wanted on several warrants pleaded guilty to four charges will spend the next 45 days in jail.

Forty-five year-old John Wilfred Miller John will spend the time for weapons charges, fraud, obstructing police and breaching the conditions of his probation.

John was sentenced Thursday, Feb. 20 at provincial court in Nanaimo following a joint submission between Crown Counsel and the defence.

Judge Catherine Crocket was told police found John with a taser and brass knuckles after a disturbance call at a Hecate St. home on May 2, 2019.

A month-and-a-half later, John unsuccessfully tried to cash a $900 cheque at a Nanaimo payday loan business. The cheque was stolen from a Nanaimo home two weeks earlier.

His obstruction conviction stemmed from providing a fake name to police when he was questioned for being an unwanted guest at a Port Alberni house.

He also failed to report to his probation officer in Nanaimo.

Three other charges against John were dropped by the Crown.

Defence lawyer Kelly Bradshaw said her client has struggled with a crystal meth addiction and mental health issues.

She said John has accessed treatment programs while in custody.

John was apprehended on Feb. 6 after Nanaimo RCMP issued a well publicized plea for his arrest. He was wanted on charges including assault and unlawful confinement after allegedly forcing a women into his car and driving away before she escaped.

He’s been in custody ever since his arrest.

Bail was granted for the upcoming charges, which will kick in when he’s released from custody in 45 days.
