UPDATE: Trans-Canada Hwy between Chemainus and Duncan re-opens after flooding

NANAIMO — Heavy rainfall in the mid island closed the Trans-Canada Hwy. and side roads due to major flooding.

Highway 1 was closed in both directions between Henry Rd. in Chemainus and Mays Rd. in Duncan on Saturday morning.

It re-opened just before 11 a.m.

The Cowichan Valley Regional District declared a local state of emergency as the widespread flooding forced people to evacuate their homes and closed several side roads.

There are also road closures in areas surrounding the Englishman and Nanaimo Rivers, which are experiencing significant flooding.
