NANAIMO – The Clippers honoured John Newberry before their game with Wenatchee and then downed the Wild 5-2.

Newberry holds Nanaimo’s single season scoring record with 185 points in 1979-80.

His name now sits beside Matt Irwin on the team’s Wall of Honour.

Newberry witnessed a rare moment late in the game when Clippers goalie Jordan Naylor was given credit for an empty net goal which capped the scoring in Nanaimo’s win.

After a scoreless first period Robby Drazner and Mackenzie Merriman scored to vault the Clippers into a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes.

Sam Morton’s power play tally pulled Wenatchee within one, but Trevor LeDonne also scored on the man advantage to give Nanaimo a late 3-1 lead in the third.

There were three late goals all with the Wild playing with goalie Daniel Chenard pulled and six attackers.

Brett Chorske deflected a point shot behind Jordan Naylor to once again narrow the gap and then Travis Walton hit the empty net to move the score to 4-2.

That set up a bizarre sequence with 39 seconds left.

A point shot went into traffic near the Clipper net, as it skittered out to the boards the Wild accidentally shot it into their own net with Naylor getting credit for the goal.

The win gives Nanaimo a 2-0 season series sweep over Wenatchee, and the Clippers end the weekend three points back of the Cowichan Valley Capitals for first in the Island Division.
