NANAIMO — A man considered by police to be a person of interest in the shocking homicide of Makayla Chang has been arrested for a charge unrelated to the Nanaimo teen’s death.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien confirmed to NanaimoNewsNOW Steven Michael Bacon is in custody, but wouldn’t reveal any details.

“We’re not saying saying what charge he was arrested for and we’re not saying when and where he was arrested,” O’Brien said.

Bacon remains a person of interest in the Chang homicide investigation, but was never considered a suspect by police.

Nanaimo RCMP turned to the public for assistance locating Bacon in mid-August, 2019.

He’d previously been questions by Ontario officers in April, 2017 and was later released.

The Chang investigation remains “active”, according to O’Brien, who wasn’t at liberty to provide any further information about the high-profile investigation and why officers wanted to speak with Bacon again.

Bacon, 55, had a personal relationship with Chang.

Police said she was often spotted at Bacon’s south Nanaimo home.

Chang, 16, was reported missing in March 2017 and her disappearance was quickly treated as a homicide.

Her body was discovered at an undisclosed location in May 2017.
