New charges laid against man accused of assaulting mid island sex trade workers

NANAIMO — Another round of charges have been laid against a Port Alberni man accused of sexually assaulting female sex trade workers.

Stephen Bradley Ewing, 40, faces two new charges of sexual assault and one choking offence for alleged offences earlier this year in Parksville and Nanaimo.

NanaimoNewsNOW learned the charges were approved by Crown Counsel on Tuesday, Dec 17.

Ewing appeared briefly in provincial court in Nanaimo Wednesday, Dec. 18 to have his bail conditions amended. The two new complainants are now included in Ewing’s no-contact order list.

Many details of the 20-minute hearing, such as the names of the newest alleged victims, are protected by a publication ban.

The latest allegations against Ewing are on top of three prior charges of sexual assault causing bodily harm linked to women in Nanaimo’s sex trade industry between March and October of 2018.

Ewing was arrested and charged on Aug. 1, 2019.

At the time, Nanaimo RCMP took the unusual step of releasing Ewing’s photo to encourage other potential victims to come forward.

RCMP confirmed the investigation into Ewing is ongoing and additional complaints should be directed to the Nanaimo detachment.

The Nanaimo Crown Counsel office expected Ewing to enter pleas to the allegations against him in court in Nanaimo on Dec. 31.
