Clippers lose 3-2 to Eagles in a shootout

Dec 7, 2019 | 10:25 PM

NANAIMO – The Clippers went down early, fought their way back, but lost out to Surrey 3-2 in a shootout.

It was 2-0 six minutes into the contest on goals by JJ Fecteau and Adamo Santia.

Sean Donaldson triggered the Teddy Bear Toss with his marker eight minutes into the game on a Nanaimo power play.

The Clippers generated lots of offense after that point but couldn’t beat goalie Thomas Scarfone, until some solid stick work by Josh Bourne off a face off play in the third period.

Zach Bennett was solid for the Clippers as well, putting a blanket on the Eagles offense for most of the night.

It was the goalies who stole the show in overtime with both making huge stops in a three on three session that featured a power play each way.

Surrey got the winner on the very last shot of the shootout in round three off the stick of Gabe Schovanek.

The loss ends Nanaimo’s streak of seven straight wins on home ice, but the team did earn a valuable point in their race for first place in the Island Division against Cowichan Valley.

The Clippers ended the night with a four point advantage and a game in hand.

There are five games remaining before the Christmas break and four of those are against the Grizzlies.

That includes Nanaimo’s next game Dec. 11 at Frank Crane Arena.
