NANAIMO — Three Nanaimo schools were placed under lockdown or hold and secure orders by RCMP Friday, Nov. 29.

School District 68 officials confirmed Dover Bay Secondary was placed under lock down procedure shortly after 10 a.m., with doors to the school locked and students kept inside.

Nearby McGirr Elementary and NDSS were listed as ‘hold and secure’ by RCMP, before being upgraded to a full lock down.

Nanaimo RCMP said the safeguards were lifted at 11:20 a.m. after the unspecified threat was found to not be credible.

Further details are expected from the Nanaimo Ladysmith Public School district.

According to the school district, lock down procedure is used in response to a dangerous assailant believed to be within the school. Hold and secure refers to a security concern in the neighbourhood.

Staff and students at Dover Bay were instructed to turn off all lights, remain silent, low to the ground and hide behind heavy furniture.

NanaimoNewsNOW reporter Spencer Sterritt said a heavy police presence was established at Dover Bay Secondary when he arrived on scene at 10:40 a.m.

“There’s about eight cop cars around the school. RCMP with rifles are patrolling the neighbouring area,” Sterritt said.

Multiple officers were also patrolling around NDSS.
