Two students killed after bus carrying University of Victoria students rolls over near Port Alberni

PORT ALBERNI— Two students have died and another three were seriously injured after a bus carrying a group from the University of Victoria rolled over Friday Sept. 13.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre (JRCC) in Victoria said the incident happened on a gravel road between Port Alberni and Bamfield around 10:00 p.m.

Officials were notified of the incident through a distress call triggered by a satellite device that was linked to the University of Victoria.

The bus had 48 people on board, including the driver. The bus was en route to the Marine Sciences Centre in Bamfield before it went off an embankment.

Authorities said three people were airlifted to a hospital in Victoria with serious or critical injuries.

More than 30 other passengers were treated locally for minor injuries.

University of Victoria President Jamie Cassels said in a statement Saturday Sept. 14 that two students of their passed away in the crash.
