NANAIMO – The Clippers outlasted the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 2-1 at Frank Crane Arena on Friday the 13th.

Both teams scored in the first ten minutes but scoring was at a premium on the night.

Josh Bourne got the Clippers on the board two and a half minutes into the contest, and Ryan Doolin evened the game halfway through the first period.

The Clippers put a lot of rubber on net but couldn’t solve Bulldogs goalie Jackson Glassford after that until the third.

Nanaimo outshot Alberni by period 17-8, 15-10, and 11-4 but it wasn’t until a third period goalmouth jam play credited to Travis Walton that they had a breakthrough.

Glassford finished with 41 saves and Zach Bennett, who was strong in net for the Clippers for the second straight contest, made 21 stops.

Coach Darren Naylor commented after the game that Nanaimo has played six very consistent periods so far, but they were rewarded for their efforts against Bulldogs while they were snakebitten against Cowichan Valley a week ago.

Friday’s game marked the season debut for Clippers captain Ethan Scardina who was credited with an assist.

Both Liam Visram and Connor Wetsch also drew into the lineup for the first time.

On Saturday Sept. 14 the Clippers will visit Alberni Valley for the rematch at 7 p.m. and then return to Nanaimo on Sunday afternoon for a home game against the Chilliwack Chiefs.
