UPDATE: Power was restored just prior to 2 p.m. Thursday after a transmission circuit failure zapped power to the entire Oceanside region for nearly two hours.

BC Hydro Spokesman Ted Olynyk told NanaimoNewsNOW said the highly unusual widespread outage of 27,000 customers occurred after their crews were repairing one of two transmission lines serving the Nanoose to Fanny Bay area.

“Timing couldn’t have been worse,” Olynyk said. “When work was being done on the other line feeding Parksville-Qualicum and it was out of service, that’s when we had this line go out of service for an unplanned outage.”

Olynyk said it’s unclear what caused the unplanned outage while crews were fixing a Qualicum Beach area transmission line.

EARLIER — A massive power outage is impacting roughly 27,000 BC Hydro customers throughout the entire Oceanside region.

BC Hydro reported a widespread transmission circuit failure impacting the Parksville-Qualicum area and surrounding rural communities at 12:06 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5.

BC Hydro spokesman Ted Olynyk told NanaimoNewsNOW it’s believed a downed transmission line is the source of the outage.

Crews are en-route to the scene. Olynyk said it’s unclear approximately when power would be restored.

Motorists are urged to observe the four-way stop procedure.
