Mounties remind motorists and parents of back to school safety

NANAIMO — Summer vacation is over for thousands of students, which means school zones are now in effect.

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, motorists are reminded to slow down to 30 kilometers an hour from 8:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m Monday through Friday.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said police will be stepping up enforcement from this week on for the next 3 or 4 months to change the behavior of drivers.

“People have to know that to back to school is an exciting time for kids, it’s right up there with Halloween.”

Drivers are advised to be on the look out for younger students in particular.

“Younger kids just want to get to school as quick as possible. The most dangerous part is when they’re walking.”

O’Brien added kids are generally more focused more on seeing school friends again, and less on the rules of the road.

“Parents and caregivers have to take the time to teach the kids that before they enter a cross walk, look right and left and make sure they have eye contact with the driver of the vehicle.”

Speeding in a school zone could result in a fine of up to $253.00 and three demerit points.

According to ICBC, 65 children walking or cycling are involved in motor vehicle crashes every year on Vancouver Island.
