Vehicle exhaust theft cases revving up in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — Police in Nanaimo issued a warning about a large increase in thefts of emission control devices found under vehicles.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said 26 reported thefts of catalytic converters since the start of the year is cause for concern as thieves increasingly have their eyes on the devices.

“It reduces toxic gasses and pollutants in the vehicle. It’s very near the exhaust system in your car. People are crawling underneath and simply cutting it off,” O’Brien said.

While vehicles can still function without the piece of equipment, a lost catalytic converter located near the exhaust pipe disrupts the performance of vehicles, according to O’Brien.

He said the eight to 10 pound units contain precious metals, which are a sought after commodity to sell to scrap yards.

O’Brien said no area of Nanaimo has been immune to these type of thefts this year.

“We’ve had reports at the Nanaimo River, we’ve had some in the north end, in the industrial zone of Bowen Rd., some down in Duke Point.”
