NANAIMO — The Clippers have named Ethan Scardina as the club’s new captain.

2019-20 will be his third year in the league and second with with the Clippers.

He was Nanaimo’s top scorer a year ago with 56 points in 54 games, and Scardina has been one of the hardest working players since his arrival in the summer of 2018.

The 18-year-old was excited to be given the ‘C’ by the Clippers.

“It’s amazing. I had chills when they put it out. I’m very honoured to lead this team and we have a great group of guys.”

Ethan Scardina is looking forward to his new role as Clippers captain.

Scardina has had two strong role models as captains in his first two seasons in the BCHL.

Those being former Clipper Troy MacTavish, two years ago in Cowichan, and Nanaimo’s previous team captain Marcus Mitchell.

“Both of them were good guys who led by example. They were always trying to help out the young guys and that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to be the first one on the ice and the last guy off, and show guys what we need to do.”

Scardina wants to land an NCAA commitment soon, but his focus is on helping his current teammates achieve their goal of winning a championship.

He’s penciled in as the Clippers number centre this year, and is off to a good start already with a pair of goals in his first two preseason games.

The Clippers have exhibition contests Aug. 30 in Langley, and Aug. 31 against Coquitlam in Delta.

They open the BCHL season at home Sept. 6 versus Cowichan.

Nanaimo is expected to name assistant captains for the year in the next few days.
