NANAIMO — A heist often seen in movies but rarely real life has caught Nanaimo RCMP’s attention.

A man was seen by security cameras entering a north-end Nanaimo store around 9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10. The security cameras picked him up leaving at 4 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said this is an unusual and strange case.

“The individual actually locked himself in a washroom stall. At some point after the store closed he jumping into the ceiling tiles and crawled over to where the loss prevention office was.”

O’Brien said the man dropped down from the ceiling, stole two monitors and some clothing from the store before escaping.

Despite going to such great pains to hide himself during the day, the man was easily spotted by security cameras inside the store after he descended from the ceiling.

O’Brien said forensic evidence left behind was discovered by investigators.

If anyone recognizes the man in the photo, they’re urged to call Nanaimo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
