NANAIMO — An animal cruelty investigation is now underway after a shy cat came into the Nanaimo SPCA’s care.

A four year old black cat named Mystic was bought to Nanaimo SPCA after being shot five times with a BB gun.

X-rays showed BB pellets were lodged in his lower abdomen, front light leg, spine and ribs. Injuries resulted in the amputation of a hind leg.

Animal care attendant Reanna Shelling told NanaimoNewsNOW it’s an incredibly sad series of events.

“The initial reaction is that it’s unfortunate there are people who would do something like this to an animal.”

Mystic remains in care of attendants at Nanaimo SPCA, with a goal of rest and rehabilitation.

“Mystic is a shy guy, who has been through a traumatic experience that has caused him a bit of anxiety,” branch manager Leon Davis said in a release.

The cost for surgery and medications is expected to be nearly $1,700, a cost the branch hopes will be offset through donations from the public.

“We do medical appeals for some animals with big veterinary bills, and all of that comes from donations from the community,” said Shelling.

“The fact we’re able to help this cat at all is entirely because of donations and we’re grateful so we can help animals like this.”

A fundraiser is now online to help Mystic.
