BC Hydro says a new distribution circuit to Gabriola and Mudge islands will address load constraints and improve reliability. However, spokesperson Karla Louwers said the upgrades likely won't impact storm related service disruptions, since both islands are so heavily treed. (BC Hydro)

BC Hydro upgrading reliability on Gabriola & Mudge Island

Jul 16, 2019 | 10:10 AM

NANAIMO — A multi-million dollar project is nearing completion to improve service for BC Hydro customers on Gabriola and Mudge islands.

Spokesperson Karla Louwers said they are adding a second distribution circuit to both islands in response to the growing demand of more than 3,500 customers.

“It will relieve the current loading constraints and provide BC Hydro with the flexibility to switch between circuits and improve the reliability to those communities,” Louwers said.

The final phase of the $3.5 million project is upgrading the overhead lines between Nanaimo and Mudge Island to accommodate the new circuit.
