NANAIMO — Police say a violent offender is off the streets and in custody after a rigorous investigation.

Dustin Sean Williams was arrested in Ladysmith on June 13 and is charged with one count of armed robbery and theft over $5,000.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the “absolutely brazen, violent individual” is accused of robbing the Best Buy Liquor Store on Jingle Pot Rd. around 7:30 p.m. on June 5.

In the incident, Williams allegedly pointed a gun at a liquor store clerk while robbing them.

O’Brien said police didn’t release any details about the robbery because investigators were certain they knew who was responsible, due to Williams’ alleged involvement in other armed robberies outside Nanaimo RCMP juristiction.

“They followed him for about two weeks. They felt if the information was put out to the public too soon, the evidence would be destroyed and they wouldn’t be able to substantiate the charge. As it was, it worked out perfectly.”

Williams is also believed to have stolen four rings worth more than $20,000 from Mappins Jewellers in Woodgrove Centre on April 10.

It’s believed he asked to see four rings from the store clerk and then quickly ran away with them.

One of the rings was found in a pawn shop. The investigation for the other three continues.

Williams remains in custody awaiting his next court appearance on June 25.

He has a lengthy criminal history, involving drunk driving and alleged assaults.
