Tom Harris Charity Classic takes another shot at helping Nanaimo’s vulnerable

NANAIMO — A long history of generosity shown by a late Nanaimo icon is mirrored by the charity golf tournament which bears his name.

The upcoming second annual Tom Harris Charity Classic is poised to surpass the $250,000 raised in the inaugural year to support a range of causes within the Nanaimo Foundation.

Laurie Bienert, the foundation’s executive director, said Tom Harris was their longest running board member and he’d be extremely proud of the tournament’s early success.

“It’s wonderful to see Tom’s legacy being carried on and people coming together to contribute money, time and in-kind gifts to raise valuable support for the needs here in Nanaimo.” Laurie Bienert

Bienert said most of the tournament’s proceeds support the Tom Harris Community Foundation, which strengthens a range of social services within Nanaimo.

She said Harris was especially passionate about advocating for vulnerable people, health and educational causes.

“We’re not a massive city like Vancouver or Victoria where we get the corporate support that some of those communities may get. It’s wonderful to see the generosity to these local needs.”

The sold out tournament takes place Friday, June 21 at Nanaimo Golf Club.

Harris was a successful Nanaimo-based businessmen and well known philanthropist, who passed away in June 2017.
