NANAIMO — You won’t find a better time to learn to fish than during Family Fishing Weekend.

Local anglers will get a chance to partake in the provincial event at lower Colliery Dam from Friday, June 14 to Sunday, June 16.

Deb Beck, recreation coordinator with the City of Nanaimo, said anyone of all ages can learn how to hook a live one between 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

“The lake has been stocked, there’s lots of fish in there. We do a trout release, which is so much fun for the kids.”

All required fishing gear will be provided.

Kids will have a chance to help stock the fish with trout. They’ll be handed buckets filled with fish, provided by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, and dump them into the water around 5:30 p.m.

Beck said a personal Family Fishing Day highlight of hers was a group of refugee children from Syria seeing fish for the first time.

“The smiles on the faces on the kids that were releasing these fish was priceless,” she recalled.

Complimentary barbecue meals will be provided at Colliery Dam by the Rotary Club of Nanaimo North.
