Man attempts to grab young Nanaimo girl: RCMP

NANAMO — Police are looking for a man who allegedly tried to grab an eight-year-old girl while she rode her bike home from school.

Mounties said it happened on Tuesday, June 11 at 3 p.m. on Bradley St. in the city’s Townsite neighbourhood. A man apparently got out of his truck and asked the girl if she wanted to see something in his truck.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the man then tried to grab the girl, but she was able to kick him and peddle away.

“She did not look back at him or the truck and didn’t stop until she arrived home. Her mom immediately contacted us,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The suspect is described as white with a dark beard and dark hair and was wearing sunglasses. The girl was unable to say how old the man was or what he was wearing.

The truck involved is described as red with a white stripe.

O’Brien said it’s unclear if this incident was an abduction attempt.

“We felt it was prudent to advise the public and also want to congratulate the young lady for taking the action she did.”

O’Brien said police will review the case to see if there’s any correlation to an incident last October near Park Avenue Elementary.

In last fall’s incident, a nine-year-old girl reported a white man driving a red Dodge Ram pickup got out of his truck and asked the girl if she wanted a ride to school.
