60-year-old man killed in south Nanaimo intersection

NANAIMO — A man is dead after running into a dark south Nanaimo intersection when he didn’t have the right of way.

He was hit in the intersection of Nicol St. and Needham St. by a pickup truck around 9 p.m. on Monday, June 10.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the man entered the intersection from Needham St. and didn’t have the right of way. He was hit by a pickup truck which was turning left on the green light to go southbound on Nicol St.

The man was airlifted to hospital in Victoria and pronounced deceased by coroners around 12:45 a.m.

The driver is traumatized but cooperating with police. O’Brien said their investigation continues and charges aren’t being considered.

This is the eighth fatality involving a motor vehicle so far in 2019. It’s the second where a pedestrian has died.
