‘It’s a huge event:’ Legendary Parksville street market returns

PARKSVILLE — One of the largest street markets on Vancouver Island just got bigger.

The 16th season of the famed Summer by the Sea Street Market begins Tuesday, June 11 at 6 p.m. It will run every Tuesday evening until the end of August in downtown Parksville.

Fifteen vendors were added this year, bringing the total to 230 booths. Market coordinator Caitlin Woon said arts, crafts, food, clothing and everything in-between is available.

“It’s a really popular market and lots of people want to participate. We’re just trying to make sure that we can get as many vendors in as possible without diluting the pot too much.”

She said roughly 3,000 customers show up for the weekly market, which entices many businesses to remain open during market hours.

“It’s a busy night for them. I think a lot of them appreciate that we can bring this amount of people to their area,” she said.

Woon said different musical entertainment is lined up for each market, while eight to 10 food trucks will be open for business.

In addition to closing the entire length of Craig St., the Hirst Ave closure will extend to McCarter St. this year.

Parking on Craig St. and Hirst Ave. will be closed after 5 p.m. on market nights.
