Nanaimo athletes triumph in weekend competition

NANAIMO — The first weekend of June brought some impressive results for local athletes and teams.

It was a great weekend for the Nanaimo Track and Field Club at the BC High School Championship in Kelowna.

The club won 14 medals including gold for Ethan Katzberg in the hammer thrown and Olivia Lundman in race walk.

Lundman set a junior girls record in race walk and also added a bronze medal in pole vault and fifth place finish in the 4×100 relay.

Keaton Heisterman won silver in both the 800m and 1500m, while Gage Zanette captured silver in the junior 1500m and bronze in the 3000m race.

Other silver medals went to Julina Benjamin and Sonya Urbanowicz (Jr) in pole vault, Nate Paris won silver in Octathlon and Krescyn Moonsamy took silver in the Grade 8 200m.

Bronze medal winners were Steen Rasmussen in pole vault, Kate Cameron in the 800m, and Madison Paugh for long jump.

In box lacrosse the Junior A Timbermen beat the defending Minto Cup champion Coquitlam Adanacs 8-7 and 9-8 on back to back days to improve to 8-1.

They now have the best record in the province and play the Adanacs a third straight time on Wednesday in Coquitlam.

The Senior B Timbermen won 14-4 over Langley and 10-3 against Royal City to up their record to 7-1.

The Senior B’s are the defending BC champions and sit in first place again at 7-1.

This Saturday the Timbermen host Coquitlam at Frank Crane Arena.

The Nanaimo Diamonds U16B fastpitch team won five of their six games at the Strawberry Vale U16B tournament on the weekend in Victoria.

They gave up only 11 runs over the course of the entire tournament and came home with the silver medal.

Through the weekend the Diamonds beat teams from Vancouver, Port Alberni, Oceanside, and Abbotsford.
