Huge medal count for Nanaimo athletes at Elwood Wylie Meet

NANAIMO— Nearly 400 athletes from across British Columbia took part in the Elwood Wylie Track and Field Meet, held at Nanaimo’s Rotary Bowl May 25-26.

Topping the U18 category in the hammer was Nanaimo Track & Field Club’s Ethan Katzberg.

He’s ranked first in Canada in his age category, and won with a distance of 63.42m.

In the 800m Nanaimo’s Keaton Heisterman improved his personal best to 1.53.44 by winning the U18 race.

That’s the best time in Canada in 2019 in his age category.

Local racewalker Olivia Lundman captured the U18 5000m event, improving her personal best by over 30 seconds. Her time of 27.38.31, is the second-best time in the country this year for a U18 athlete.

The 13-year-old Nanaimo girls won 14 out of 17 events scheduled for their age category.

Hailey Martin won gold in a staggering nine events (200m, 300m, 800m, 1200m, 80m hurdles, 200m hurdles, pole vault, long jump, triple jump).

Katelyn Putz (2000m, shot put), Lydia Paris (high jump), Emma Cleaver (discus), and Annika Lundman (racewalk) won the rest.

In total Nanaimo Track & Field Club athletes took the top spot in the medal count, winning 95 gold medals, far ahead of the Campbell River Comets team with 39.
