‘The need is huge:’ Nanaimo food bank campaigns to fight summer lull

May 27, 2019 | 7:58 AM

NANAIMO — A city-wide campaign is underway to vastly boost the amount of food available for families in need.

Paper bags were delivered to 4,500 doorsteps across the city this week for the Nanaimo Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank and their Food4Summer campaign. The bags will be stuffed with non-perishables and picked up on Saturday, June 1.

Food bank executive director Peter Sinclair told NanaimoNewsNOW their summer campaign is essential and they’ve already seen their supply of non-perishable food diminish.

“When you’ve got 3,300 people coming to the food bank monthly and the donations drop, which we do see every summer, it puts us in a bit of a situation.” Peter Sinclair

The campaign raised roughly $40,000 worth of food last year.

“What would be ideal is if we could see that get up toward $80,000 worth of food,” Sinclair said. “That would make a huge difference for us and go a long way in carrying us right through the summer months.”

The most sought after items are canned fish, beans, vegetables and pasta.

Food 4 Summer donations can also be made at any Thrifty Foods location or the Loaves and Fishes warehouse on Fry St. until June 7.
