$500 in meat and cheese stolen from south Nanaimo pizzeria

NANAIMO — Someone will be eating well after stealing several hundred dollars worth of pizza supplies.

Nanaimo RCMP confirmed the Pizza Mia location in Southgate Shopping Centre was robbed sometime Thursday night or Friday morning.

Store manager Satu Bock told NanaimoNewsNOW roughly $500 worth of meat, cheese and soda was taken, as well as their computer, cash register and recently emptied safe.

“Most unsettling, they took five large kitchen knives,” Bock said. “They were one of the last things I noticed was gone. It popped into my head ‘I hope they didn’t take the knives’ and then I found the knives were gone.”

Pizza Mia owner Nila Kassiri said she “cannot imagine how all these mozzarella block and rolls of ham and bacon could be used or even stored in home size fridges.”

She said they suspect someone will try to sell the food to other pizza shops to make a profit.

It’s a plan not anticipated to take the thieves very far.

“Interestingly, on the cheese itself it’s labelled ‘Not for resale,'” Bock said. “So I don’t know, they’d have to unpackage it.”

Bock said police told them the method of bypassing the deadbolt on the back door was unusual. The deadbolt was popped out of the back door and left lying on the ground with the door ajar.

There are cameras inside the store. Unfortunately, Bock said the owner has forgotten the password to access the system so they don’t yet have footage of whoever pilfered their food.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Nanaimo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
