Nanoose Bay teen accused of stealing vehicle and running from police

PARKSVILLE — A sharp-eyed Good Samaritan in Nanoose Bay is credited for helping police find an alleged vehicle thief.

Oceanside RCMP said Joel Edward Moody, 19, of Nanoose Bay is accused of stealing a vehicle from the area on May 3.

Moody was allegedly seen later the same day going up and down driveways in Nanoose Bay.

An astute witness called RCMP after watching a suspicious man, believed to be Moody, get into a car and drive to the nearby gas station.

The license plate was reported and the car was confirmed to be the one stolen previously.

Police said Moody ran away from officers into the nearby woods.

A K9 unit was brought in and tracked Moody down. He was arrested without incident.

Court records showed Moody was charged with possession of stolen property and breaching court ordered conditions for the May 3 incident.

He remains in custody pending a May 28 bail hearing in Nanaimo.

In addition, court records outline a variety of other active property crime and driving offences against Moody in Parksville and Nanaimo last fall.
