Employee interrupts armed robbery in Errington

PARKSVILLE — A planned robbery at an Errington business was thwarted by an employee who boldly stood up to the would-be thieves.

It happened on April 30 when two masked men armed with baseball bats entered a Grafton Ave. store.

“They went inside and the employee immediately grabbed one of the baseball bats and chased the young men out of the business,” Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman said.

“We could see it all on excellent video surveillance that the business had.”

After being rebuffed, the two suspects ran to a waiting vehicle driven by a third suspect.

Foreman said several days later an adult male and two youths turned themselves into the Oceanside RCMP detachment and admitted to their roles to the crime.

The trio were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in court in June.

Though no one was injured, Foreman stressed the importance of robbery victims not responding the way the employee in this case did.

“Confronting these people can result in putting you at serious risk, injury or even death.”

Foreman said armed robberies are “quite rare” in the Oceanside region.
