NANAIMO — A Vancouver-based developer is one permit away from being able to begin construction of a high-rise condo building in the heart of downtown Nanaimo.

By a unanimous vote Monday night, Council approved a development permit for a 24-storey, 110-unit residential condo building at 77 Chapel St., directly across from the courthouse.

“This is a remarkable and very important improvement for our downtown,” mayor Leonard Krog said ahead of the vote.

The approval means Wertman Development Corporation needs only a building permit to break ground on what would be Nanaimo’s second-tallest building.

In November of last year, Council passed a rezoning application for the site, allowing for 24-storeys. The previous zoning capped building heights in the area at six-storeys.

Vice-president Jason Wertman previously told NanaimoNewsNOW their goal was to create a “luxury condo development” geared towards retirees looking to downsize and professionals working and commuting to Vancouver.

The proposal also included ground floor commercial and office space, an athletic club, townhouse units along Skinner St. and more underground parking spaces than required.

The submitted plans called for 137 residential parking spaces and 30 commercial ones, more than the City’s bylaws require. There would also be 130 bicycle storage spaces included.

The Chapel St. site, previously two lots, were used for parking and were purchased by Wertman roughly two years ago.
