Myths and legends theme excites sand sculptors for Parksville’s Beachfest

Feb 22, 2019 | 11:40 AM

PARKSVILLE — Tourists and community-minded residents will be the company of legends and mythical titans when visiting Parksville Community Beach.

The myths and legends theme was chosen for the 2019 Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition, as voted by the community.

Event manager Wendy Sears said the theme earned 40 per cent of the nearly 700 online votes, triumphing over planes, trains and automobiles or carnivals.

It was also the favourite among sculptors who had a chance to vote.

“I think it speaks more to what their work is like. We only give them 30 hours to do what they do and it looks amazing, like statues you’d see in Europe.”

Last year’s winner of Jimi Hendrix, under the theme of wild things, could even be considered again in 2019 given the wide scope of the category.

Sears said there’s no restrictions on myths and it can be legends from the past or the present.

Nearly 126,000 people went through the gates to see the sculptures in 2018.

The gates for the festival open in mid-July.
