Short manned Clippers earn point in 4-3 OT loss in Duncan

DUNCAN – The Clippers and Capitals went beyond 60 minutes on Saturday night with Cowichan Valley getting a 4-3 win in overtime.

Nanaimo finishes the season series 6-1-1 against their island rivals and are on a run of collecting points in three of their last four games.

Marcus Mitchell opened the scoring for the Clippers with a power play goal three minutes into the contest and then Landon Pavlisin took over from there.

His best save in the first period was on a two on one when he stopped David Melaragni in close.

The Capitals did tie the game early in the second on a long range shot by Niko Selivanov on the man advantage.

Just after a Clippers penalty kill Tyler Williams gave Nanaimo the lead back on a two on one with Ethan Scardina.

Pavlisin rose up again in the second period with two of his best saves on Cowichan Valley’s Olivier Gauthier.

Paul Selleck tied it up with another power play marker early in the third before Devon Mussio vaulted the Clippers in front sniping a rebound behind goalie Pierce Diamond.

With the goalie pulled in the final minute the Capitals evened the game at 3-3 on a Brady Lynn deflection.

Melaragni got Cowichan the winning goal early in overtime to give the home side a 4-3 victory.

The Capitals outshot the Clippers 32-20 with both teams going to the power play six times.

Nanaimo had one man advantage goal and Cowichan Valley scored two.

Saturday’s Three Stars were Landon Pavlisin (28 saves), Niko Selivanov (1g), and David Melaragni (1g).

Nanaimo played with eight regulars out of their line up and used five affiliate players in the match up.

Another busy week of hockey is coming up for the Clippers with a home and home series with Alberni Valley Wednesday and Friday and a home game versus the Merritt Centennials on Saturday.
