Public to choose Parksville sandcastle competition theme

PARKSVILLE — You can help shape what some of the most impressive sandcastles in the world at Parksville Beach will look like this summer.

Wendy Sears, Parksville Beach Festival Society event manager, said they’ve turned to the public to choose the theme at the annual Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition.

There are three choices:

  • Carnival
  • Planes, trains and automobilies
  • Myths and legends

People can vote for their preferred sandcastle design theme online, or at Quality Foods locations in Parksville, Qualicum Beach or Nanoose Bay. Voting closes on Feb. 17.

“It’s exciting for people to be part of it and have an opportunity to pick a theme,” Sears told NanaimoNewsNOW. “We’ve already got about 200 online votes and we just launched it on the weekend.”

Historically the public selected the sandcastle theme for the annual competition in Parksville, but that tradition was put on hold for the past two years, according to Sears.

This year’s Parksville Beach Festival runs from July 12 to August 18.

The wildly popular event saw a record of nearly 126,000 people through the gates last summer to view 22 creations by some of the world’s top sand sculptors.

Sears said they are now accepting applications from talent around the world.

“We have no problem getting sculptors, I’d say we pretty much get the best.”
