Clippers win ten straight, earn BCHL’s longest 2018-19 winning streak

TRAIL – It’s ten wins in a row for the Nanaimo Clippers!

After a 4-3 overtime victory in Trail the Clippers now own the longest BCHL winning streak in the 2018-2019 season.

Nanaimo got off to a fast start with an unassisted goal by Ethan Scardina five minutes in.

That tally was a milestone, his 20th of the season.

The Smoke Eaters got two back, first on a power play chance for Hayden Rowan, and then on a strange deflection goal by Diarmad MiMurro.

But Scardina finished off a perfect goalmouth pass from Sammy Steele late in the period to even the game at 2-2 at the intermission break.

There was no scoring the second with Trail’s Adam Marcoux and the Clippers Jordan Naylor both looking strong.

Naylor in particular made a lunging save on a 2-0 break when Smoke Eaters leading scorer Chase Stevenson got a close in shot.

Marcus Mitchell ripped in a shorthanded goal early in the third period to give Nanaimo a 3-2 lead only to have Tyler Ghirardosi respond midway through the frame to force OT.

The Clippers controlled the entire minute and 44 seconds of the extra session and Ethan Scardina completed his hat trick off a Robby Drazner rebound.

In the two game season series with the Smoke Eaters Nanaimo won both games 4-3, October 7th was a shootout victory and Friday’s game in overtime.

The final shots were 31-30 for Nanaimo and both teams had six power plays, with Trail scoring once.

Friday’s Three Stars were Ethan Scardina (3g), Kent Johnson (2a), and Sammy Steele (2a).

On Saturday the Clippers go to Penticton for a matchup against the co-Interior Division leaders.

It will be a homecoming for Marcus Mitchell, Devon Mussio, and Sammy Steele who are all former Vees.
