Port of Nanaimo tight-lipped on departure of CEO

Oct 24, 2018 | 4:44 PM

NANAIMO — The Port of Nanaimo has very little to say about the apparent abrupt departure of its president and chief executive officer.

An emailed statement attributed to Port board chair Michelle Corfield confirmed Ewan Moir is no longer serving as CEO and said privacy laws restricted them from disclosing any other information about Moir.

A follow-up request for an interview was not responded to.

Another email sent to Port stakeholders said Moir’s tenure ended on Oct. 18. It said Ian Marr and Mike Davidson will act as co-CEO/president and any questions about operations should be directed to them.

Emails to Marr and Davidson were also not answered.

Moir officially took over the Port’s top job on Oct. 10, 2017, hired to replace Bernie Dumas who retired after nine years in the position.

In a 2017 release announcing Moir’s hiring, the Port described him as having vast industry experience, a “people-focused leadership style” and exceptional business development skills.

Moir’s departure comes as the Port is in the midst of several key initiatives.

The longtime effort to work with a proponent to launch a passenger ferry to Vancouver remains in flux. The Port recently announced ambitious plans to revamp the boat basin and is working on multi-million dollar additions to their waterfront land, including an automobile processing plant and an oil spill response base.

Moir took the job while the Port was also in the midst of significant turmoil in dealing with key stakeholders.

A much-publicized campaign to end their governance of the inner harbour gained support from the City, backed by the majority of the outgoing Council. Meanwhile, a frayed relationship with Snuneymuxw First Nation was often thrust into the spotlight, with SFN publicly criticizing the hiring shortly after an initial meeting with Moir.
