Clippers impressive in 6-2 win over Surrey

NANAIMO — The Clippers turned up their game and got back in the win column with a 6-2 win over the Surrey Eagles on Friday.

It was arguably their best game of the season, coming on the heels of their worst outing on Wednesday.

Tyler Williams, Sammy Steele, and Mackenzie Merriman scored in a there minute span in the first period to get the team rolling.

Then the Eagles scored a power play goal on a Holden Katzalay deflection to cut the lead to 3-1 but Aiden Hansen-Bukata’s point shot gave Nanaimo a 4-1 lead after the first period.

Both Hansen-Bukata and Ethan Scardina extended their point streaks to five games over the course of the night.

The Eagles did get with in two on a Matt Barnes power play goal in the second period but Gunnar Wegleitner added a man advantage goal for the Clippers before 40 minutes was up.

A pretty goal by Josh Bourne capped off the scoring late in the third.

Nanaimo outshot Surrey 31-23 with both teams going 2/7 on the power play.

Jordan Naylor got his third win of the season with the Eagles Kyle Dumba tagged with the loss.

Carter Stephenson (3a), Gunnar Wegleitner (1g 1a), and Tyler Williams (1g 2a) were Friday’s Three Stars.

The Clippers have Saturday off before hosting the Powell River Kings on Sunday at 2 p.m.

This will be the fourth meeting of the season between the two teams, and pending the outcome of other action Nanaimo could move into a second place tie with Powell River in the Island Division Standings.
