Clippers add scoring forward Gunnar Wegleitner
NANAIMO — Last week the Clippers made several changes to their blueline with the additions of Trevor Isaksson, Andrew Lucas, and Liam Belcourt.
Isaksson and Lucas have been in the lineup already and Belcourt may make his debut this week.
Another new player set to make his debut is forward Gunnar Wegleitner.
The 20-year-old was acquired this week in a futures deal with Kirkland Lake of the NOJHL.
Wegleitner spent last season with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL putting up ten goals and nine assists in 57 games.
This won’t be his first time on playing hockey on Vancouver Island as he appeared in 12 games with the Victoria Royals in the 16-17 campaign.
It won’t be his first time playing in the BCHL either.
The Vancouver native played 14 games for the Surrey Eagles in 2015-16 and recorded two points.
With the acquisition of Wegleitner the Clippers fill two needs.
One is the need for another veteran in the locker room.
The club is short on experienced players, as Nanaimo has opted to ice a younger roster with only two other 20-year-olds in Jordan Dawson and Marcus Mitchell.
Wegleitner gives the younger players another role model who has played 112 games in the WHL and is closing in on 150 games of junior hockey.
He also gives the Clippers a player who has proven he can score.
Ten goals at the WHL level a year ago is a solid total in 57 games played, and the last time Wegleitner played in Junior A in the NOJHL his numbers were outstanding.
In 13 games with the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in 16-17 he had 15 goals and nine assists.
