Kings beat Clippers 4-2 in special teams battle

POWELL RIVER — The Clippers lost a divisional battle 4-2 to the Kings on Friday.

Ben Berard was the story with a hat trick including the game winner with under four minutes to play.

Berard also opened the scoring with a power play goal in the first period to give Powell River a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Josh Bourne tallied his second of season on a power play deflection in the second to send the game to the break at 1-1.

Nanaimo rookie Aiden Hansen-Bukata’s first BCHL goal gave the Clippers a brief 2-1 lead in the third, as he sniped a shot high to the glove side on Mitch Adamyk.

Shortly after that Nanaimo captain Marcus Mitchell was given a five minute boarding penalty and a game misconduct which seemed to swing momentum.

Liam Lytton banged in a shot from a sharp angle on Jordan Naylor to even the score at two, before Berard swept in off of a faceoff on the man advantage to give the Kings a late lead at 3-2.

He also ended the scoring with an empty netter in the late stages.

Both teams had two power play goals with the Kings have ten chances on the man advantage to the Clippers five.

Nanaimo falls to 1-2 on the season after losing their first road game, but they’ll have a chance at redemption right away with a 5 p.m. game against the Kings Saturday back at the Hap Parker Arena.

Friday’s Three Stars were Ben Berard (3g), Brady Lynn (2a) and Jayden Lee.

The Clippers have games against Vernon and West Kelowna at the BCHL Showcase next week and their next home game is Sunday September 23rd at 2 p.m against Victoria.
