Direct Nanaimo to Toronto flights expected next summer despite late season cancellations

NANAIMO — Air Canada has cancelled several direct flights between Nanaimo Airport and Toronto this fall, but the air carrier vows it’s committed to the route beyond this year.

Air Canada confirmed direct flights between Nanaimo and Toronto won’t be offered after Sept. 23. The trial of the route was originally intended to run between June 22 and Oct. 8.

“Demand for the non-stop flight did not warrant continuing,” spokeswoman Angela Mah told NanaimoNewsNOW in an email.

However, she said Air Canada plans to offer the service for a second summer next year.

“While a full review will be conducted after the end of the seasonal service, we currently see the opportunity to continue the non-stop flight next summer to meet demand during the peak travel period.”

Air Canada offers direct flights four times a week seasonally between Nanaimo and Toronto, which is the same number of weekly flights planned for next summer, Mah said.

The scrapped late season Nanaimo to Toronto flights came the attention of NanaimoNewsNOW after a reader was alarmed when Air Canada suddenly cancelled his already booked trip.

Air Canada Rouge uses its 136-seat Airbus 319 for the Nanaimo to Toronto route. It debuted in late June to rave reviews from many in the harbour city.
