NANAIMO -Downtown Nanaimo will soon have another eyecatching mural brightening up the area.

The Nanaimo Arts Council announced Friday their summer mural design contest, where artists of all stripes will craft a mural and then have it developed by experienced artists. A final design will be selected by a jury and will hopefully adorn the walls of a downtown building by the fall.

Dan Appell with the Council said every aspect of the mural, from design to execution, will bring the community together.

“It keeps everybody engaged and we can elevate the work to a point where people will really enjoy it for a very long time.”

Though there’s very few restrictions on what Nanaimo’s artists should consider, Appell said there is one key aspect to take into consideration.

“If it’s not going to impress the public, it’s not going to have an impact.”

There’s $13,000 available this year for one mural, but Appell said the hopeful goal is to eventually grow into a mural festival.

Submissions for the competition must be complete by the end of July.
