Driver airlifted to hospital after crash in Nanoose Bay

NANAIMO — Two people were hurt when a vehicle went off Hwy. 19 in the Nanoose Bay area.

Central Island Traffic Services RCMP Sgt. Darrin Ramey said it happened at 7:25 Monday morning on the Nanoose Hill near Ross Rd.

He told NanaimoNewsNOW the southbound vehicle may have hydroplaned.

“The vehicle lost control on the highway, went into the ditch and rolled,” Ramey said. “The driver was pinned in the vehicle and had a head injury and the passenger sustained only a minor hand injury.”

The driver, who was flown to hospital in Victoria, had to be pulled out by emergency responders.

“It looks like it was raining quite heavily at the time and the vehicle may have hydroplaned and from that it’s like driving on ice.”

Ramey said both occupants were wearing seatbelts.

The crash reduced southbound traffic to one lane.

It was the second serious crash to take place recently in the same stretch of Hwy. 19.

A Parksville man died when he was ejected from the vehicle he was driving on Friday, March 16 heading northbound in the same section of the highway.
