Registration underway for the 2018 season of Nanaimo Minor Softball

NANAIMO – Registration is underway for the upcoming softball season.

Players can now sign up for Nanaimo Minor Softball from the U-6 level all the up to U-19.

There’s an online form to register at nanaimosoftball.ca.

The organization has re-branded from Nanaimo Minor Fastball to eliminate confusion for parents and players.

President Brian Cornborough says the kids play softball, and they play under the Softball BC banner so changing the name made sense.

“Fastball didn’t mean a lot to people, and we do use a softball. We just thought it would be more in tune with what we do and it might attract more kids,” said Cornborough.

Last season Cornborough says the association had 200 kids registered and they’re hoping to attract more this year – especially at the U-6 level.

“We believe by going into schools and advertising as well that we can increase those numbers.  We want to make our mark out there and encourage kids to get involved,” Cornborough said.

There were 35 kids signed up in the U-6 category last year, and in an effort to get more participation the Nanaimo Minor Softball Association is waiving the $85 fee for that level (for the first 50 signups).

If parents register their kids before February 28 they’ll save $20 off of the regular fee at all levels.

That’s in an effort to get a head start on how the numbers look at each age level.

The softball season begins the first or second week of April with most of the games at Beban Park.
